Practice German Journal: Skellig

Ich habe das Buch Skellig von David Almond gelesen.  Es war sehr gut und ganz interessant.  Der Held des Buch (auch der Icherzähler) ist ein Junge, der Michael heisst.  Seine Familie hat eines neues Haus gekauft, und Michael ist nicht froh.  Das Haus is alt und heruntergekommen - es braucht viel reparieren.  Aber, das ist nicht warum Michael nicht froh ist.  

Michael ist nicht froh weil seine kleine Schwester sehr krank ist.  Sie war zu früh geboren.  Sie ist sehr klein und sehr schwach.  Er ist besorgt wegen sie.

Aber...  Etwas seltsam ist in seine Garage.  Ein Mensch?  Ein Mann?  Eine Kreatur?

Ein Engel?

Mit seine neue Freundin, Mina, helfe Michael der Mann.  Michael und Mina finden etwas erstaunlich, und lernen viel.

Michael ist eines sympathisch Charakter.  Er scheint meistens realistisch - jedoch manchmal ganz unwahrscheinlich.

Die kurzer Kapitels des Buch gefällt mir.  Das Buch war sehr einfach zu lesen. Ich fand es schwer zu anzuhalten.  Ich empfehle dieses Buch Ihnen.  Es war gut.

vihkan seda värvi

Today, I learnt how to say "I hate this colour" in Estonian, so I thought I'd better not waste it.

Ma vihkan roosa. See on naeruväärne värvi. Ma vihkan, et naised pean roosa alati kandma. Aga, minu käekell on roosa. Ja minu prillid, ka. Ma kannan roosad riideid, aga see ei mulle meeldi.

So there.

CORRECTION:

Ah, yes.  I neglected to use the partitive case where appropriate, and made a few other errors in terms of plurals and such - things to think on further.  Thanks to "Anonymous" for the following correction:

Ma vihkan roosat. See on naeruväärne värv. Ma vihkan, et naised peavad alati roosat kandma. Aga minu käekell on roosa. Ja minu prillid ka. Ma kannan roosasid riideid, aga see ei mulle meeldi.

Brownsville

Meine Heimstadt heißt "Brownsville", aber das ist ein bisschen Witz. Wir nennen sie "Brownsville" weil sie ist immer braun. Aber, sie ist nicht immer braun. Manchmal ist sie ist nass und sehr grün. Für zwei oder drei Monate regnet es immer und die Bäche überschwemmen. Dann ist alles grün und frische. Das ist unser Sommer.

Aber, das Wetter ändert, und die Sonne scheint und scheint...

Es ist gut im Herbst, weil alles ist noch ein bisschen grün und die Sonne scheint. Im Winter ist alles trocken, aber die Blumen blühen und die Vogel singen. Unser milden Wintern sind angenehmen. Sie sollten us im Winter besuchen. Naturlich ist alles braun, aber das ist nicht so schrecklich...


What that should say:

My hometown is called "Brownsville", but that's a little joke. We call it "Brownsville" because it is always brown. but, it is not always brown. Sometimes it is wet and green. For two or three months it always rains and the creeks flood. Then everything is green and fresh. That's our Summer.

But, the weather changes and the sun shines and shines...

It is good in Autumn, because everything is still a little green and the sun is shining. In Winter everything is dry, but the flowers bloom and the birds sing. Our mild winters are pleasant. You should visit us in Winter. Of course, everything is brown, but that's not so bad...

Klassen

Meine Deutsch Klassen beginnt bald.

Ich bin sehr begeistert. Heute habe ich alle meines Vorlesungsskript für due ertse Woche heruntergeladen.

Dieses Jahr will ich mehr Posten auf Deutsch schriben. Vielleicht soll ich einege Geschichten auch schriben?

White.

Minu uues kontor on väga valge. Valge ja hall. See on valgus, aga ei ilus. Ei inetu, aga liiga napp, et olla 'ilus'.

Mein neues Büro ist sehr weiss. Weis und grau. Es ist licht, aber nicht schön. Es ist nicht hässlich, aber zu spärlich, um "schön" sein.

My new office is very white. White and grey. It is light, but not beautiful. It is not ugly, but too sparse to be "beautiful".

A spot of homework

Ich habe um 7 Uhr aufgestanden. Ich habe um 7.15 Uhr Frühstück gegessen. Um 8.20 Uhr ist ich nach Arbeit gefahren. Ich habe bis 5 Uhr gearbeitet. Jetzt bin ich meine Hausaufgaben machen. Gestern, habe ich meine Hausaufgaben nicht gemacht.

Na, wirklich, das stimmt nicht. Ich habe meine Hausaufgaben gestern auch gemacht.

Ich habe lange studiert, aber nicht gut. Ich weißt nicht viel. Ich mache viel Fehler. Ich habe das Perfekt nicht gut erinnert, und meine Sätze sind schrecklich.

Heute, habe ich der Study Plan endlich gefunden. Zu spät, natürlich. Ich sollte er seit drei Monate gefunden (das ist sehr schrecklich, Entschuldigung).

Ich bin müde, und habe diese Sätze nicht gut geschrieben. Das ist Leben.

Zweibelrostbraten

Hallo, Kellnerin?

Ich habe Fragen über die Speisekarte.

Haben Sie keine Fisch? Ich will nicht rot Fleisch.

Keine Fisch? Das ist sehr seltsam.

Und vegetarier Gerichte? Nein?

Nur Salat. Klar...

Hat die Salat Zweibeln? Ich kann nicht Zweibeln essen.

Keine Salat ohne Zweibeln. Das stimmt?

Eestlane

"Kas sa eestlane?"

See on küsimus mu õpetaja küsis mulle, üks kord. See oli harjutus.

Ma loodan võiksin ütleda "Jah! Ma olen eestlane. Minu vanaema sündis Eestimaal, ja mul on eesti pass." Aga ma ei saa.

Oh, see on tõde. Mu vanaema sündis Eestimaal. Haarjumaal, tegelikult. Ja mul on eesti pass.

Ainult et ma ei elu Eestimaal. Ma ei kunagi elanud Eestimaal. Nii ma ei tunne nagu eestlane.

Ehk ühel paeval...

Princess Powerhouse

Ich habe eine tolle Idee für eine Film. Es ist die bestern Idee für jeden, der gern "Princess Diaries" oder "Bend it Like Beckham":

"Princess Powerhouse" - eine Film von einer Prinzessin, der in Verkleidung Fußball spielen.

She's a princess, see, so she has to pretend to be genteel and respectable, and is probably a target for kidnappers and such, so the whole thought of playing football would be a big no-no, but she loves the game with a passion. So, with the help of a faithful manservant who pretends to be her father, she plays for a local team under a false name.

As a princess, she has to hide the bruises and find good reasons to leave the palace without anyone noticing, but it's all relatively easy... Until she's given the opportunity to play in the national league. It's a dream come true for a football mad teenage girl, but a logistical nightmare for a princess who has been playing under a pseudonym, but not really "in disguise".

Can she pull it off? With both identities now in the public eye, how long will it be before someone notices that the princess and the football powerhouse are one and the same?

Deutsche Woche

Es ist Deutsche Woche. Mein Computer ist jetzt im Deutsch. Ich lese deutsche Kinderbücher und ich fernsehe deutsche TV.

Der Pilotfilm für "Alarm für Cobra 11" war sehr lange. Ich dachte, es wäre 90 Minuten lang, aber es war sicherlich mehr. Es war interessant, und sehr laut. Vielen schnell Autounfälle.

Ich möchte von einigen "Tim und Struppi" Bücher. Ich habe zwei "Tintin" Bücher im Estnisch, aber keine im Deutsch.

"Tintin" ist sehr cool.

Ich bin müde. Es war eine lange Tag.

Better in my dream

For some daft reason, I decided to translate one of my own poems into Estonian. The original version is over on my siegeworks blog (along with this translation) but this is my hamfisted attempt to write it in Eesti (maybe half re-writing it a little on the way)

Ja seal ta on
Tõde et valgustab vale
Paljastab mis ma teadnud juba
Aga püüdmanud eitama.

Ja kõik mu kavad
On libisevad läbi minu käte
Aga, kõige lõpuks ma teadnud alati
Nad olid rajatud liivale

Corrections to bad choices of grammar/vocabulary/idiomatic turns of phrase gratefully appreciated (only for the Estonian version - you can keep your mits off the English one, thank-you-very-much).

Unstable buildings

Some time ago I indulged in a ham-fisted attempt to translate the classic Play School song "A House with a Floor" into Estonian. As often happens when I'm in the middle of a meeting, I decided it was worth my while trying to translate the same song into German*. More ham-fisted attempts follow:

*Just to clarify, I don't often think I should translate "A House with a Floor" into German while in meetings. I just often think anything at all would be more interesting than what I'm currently doing.

A correction

Ma tahan varsti reisida Saksamaale ja Austriale.

I had written:

Ma tahan reisida Saksamaal ja Austrial varsti

And I'm reasonably sure I used the wrong case to say "travel to" as opposed to "travel in", and I think the "soon" was in the wrong place for an Estonian sentence (although I could be wrong - I am basing a lot of my interpretations of Estonian sentence structure on whether or not Google comes up with something ridiculous when I put my sentences into the translator, which could be erroneous).

While I'm writing sentences in target languages for practice, I may as well throw in a Saksakeeles attempt:

Ich will nach Deutschland un Östereich bald reisen.

Kass

Meine Katze möcht Fische essen. Aber, sie möcht nicht alle Fische. Sie leibt Tunfische. Tunfische mit Huhn, Tunfische mit andere Fische, Tunfische mit Reis... Sie ist ein Tunfische Fanatiker!

Das ist in ordnung, aber sie möcht ihr Tunfische mit ihr Pfoten essen, und sie schüttelt ihr Pfoten. Das ist sehr unordentlich, und ein bisschen eklig.

Mu kass meeldib kala. Aga ta ei meeldib kõik kala. Ta armastab tuun. Tuun kanaga, tuun teine kalaga, tuun riisiga... Ta on tuun fanaatik!

See on korras, aga ta meeldib süüa tema käppadega, ja ta raputab oma käppad. See on väga korratu, ning natuke jäle.

Vesi Pudel

Mein blau Flasche ist schrecklich. Sie ist nicht eine gut Wasser Flasche. Sie ist undicht, und das ist nicht gut.

Minu sinine pudel on kohutav. See ei ole hea veepudel. See on lekkiv, ja siis ei ole hea.

You know, it is surprisingly difficult to figure out how to say "does not hold water" using online dictionaries when you mean it literally.

Autokobold

Ich habe [eine] kleine Kobold wer im [meine] Auto wohnen. Er ist sehr ärgerlich. Er speilt mit der Türlicht und es [flackern] macht.

Yeah, still a bit shaky on the accusative indefinite articles (and possessive pronouns) and the correct verb endings for persons. I'll come back and correct later.

Mul on väike paharet et elab mu autos. Ta on väga tüütu. Ta mängib ukse valgusega ja põhjustab virvendamine.

I think my grammar's a bit off - especially with the attempt at "door light". Also, I cheated with my original intention on "makes it flicker". I'll come back and correct later

Ich möchte den ganzen Käse haufen. Bitte.

Raske

Ma õpin saksa keelt ja eesti keelt. Inimesed ütlevad et saksa keel on raske, või ma mõtlen eesti keel on kõige raskem.
